I live here in Colorado, but most of my close family lives on the other far side of the country on the East Coast. This makes it difficult for us to connect on a personal level in the traditional ways like video and voice conversations. Both of which have there glaring downsides. So i managed to get my brother to grab one of these Meta Quest 2 headsets with me and it has completely changed our interactions together!
Now instead of having the same boring phone conversations over and over agin like, “Hey what you been up to? You been doing alright? How are the kids?” Now we can load up into a private virtual room and share videos or just chat in a more natural and realistic way. Or we can jump into a virtual game of ping pong or mini golf. It is really incredible and I was not expecting to enjoy it so much. Now I am enjoying the headset about 2-3 hours a day. Which is convenient because that is about how long the battery will last.
Since it is wireless I don’t have to worry about hooking up to anything or snagging the cable while I am trying to use it. It is all self contained so I can bring it from room to room and even virtually map different rooms called “play spaces” and the headset remembers them and how big they are. It also makes it super easy to share and pass the headset around which can be an excellent party activity. I had a group of 5 or so friends come over and i showed them each the headset for a combined 10+ hours straight. This has definitely made me and my family closer and really bridged the gap that was forming between us.
